COLLAPSING BUILDINGS
Sometimes when a large earthquake hits a major city, there is minimal damage. But in other cases, a smaller earthquake completely destroys an entire area. Often, the difference comes down to the way the buildings are constructed.
The greatest earthquake damage commonly happens in very dense cities, where buildings may be poorly constructed. Unfortunately, the cheapest and easiest structures to build are sometimes the deadliest during an earthquake. Buildings designed to house a lot of people above shops on the ground floor frequently have fewer stabilizing walls, because the commercial space below is left open for the shops or for parking. During the shaking, then, the ground floor collapses first.
Sometimes seismic upgrades can make an existing building earthquake resistant. Here, external bracing is added to a concrete parking garage in California. LEONARD G./WIKIPEDIA.ORG
